This tutorial was based on mIRC v6.16, but it should work for all recent versions of mIRC, with slight modifications. It is for people with hardware firewalls, not software firewalls.

Part 1

mIRC Local Info Options
  1. Have your computer's external IP address and hostname (if available) handy. mIRC will not start with an IP address starting with 192.168., 10., or 172.16 (to 30). (those are internal IP addresses). You may also need to open or forward ports in your firewall configuration, which will be discussed in Part 2.
  2. Get to the screen shown above in mIRC (ALT+O, Connect, Local Info).
  3. In the On connect, always get section, uncheck the check boxes to the left of Local Host then IP Address.
  4. Replace whatever is in the Local Host and IP Address text boxes with your external hostname and IP address, which you collected in step 1.
  5. Click "OK" and test to see if you can dcc send or chat successfully, yet. If not, proceed to Part 2.

Part 2

mIRC Advanced Connection Options
  1. Get to the screen shown above in mIRC (ALT+O, Connect, Options, Advanced).
  2. Set the DCC Ports to a range of 5 or 10 ports (one for each dcc chat/send). Just about any range of 5 or 10 ports should work, there are no specific ones to use.
  3. Open or forward these ports in your firewall's configuration.
